 Bronx Institute for Urban Systems

Mission
Deriving and implementing sustainability solutions through GIS Education and Urban System Research.
Goal and purpose
The goal of the Bronx Institute for Urban Systems is to do innovative research in thermodynamic architecture, landscape design, and gathering spatial information using Systems Theory. Educate and advocate for underprivilege communities through spatial education and providing Geographic Information Systems Services to organizations working on urban solutions.
The Institute will have a spatial component. The spatial component includes the use of GIS technology to understand the Urban system and to inform residents on the impacts projects will have on the urban system or the urban system of their communities. It will include a warehouse of spatial information, first starting with census data and then from data gathered onsite.

The research component of the Institute is to teach Bronx residents the latest findings in sustainable design and systems theory and work with residents and industries to develop innovative solutions for architecture and landscape design. The institute will also do breakthrough research on new strategies to reduce fossil fuel consumption, work on renovating industrial sites using sustainability strategies, researching methods on renovating or maintaining old housing stock, including NYCHA .
